A nurse-led workforce framework

AOLA Workforce Integration Model™

AOLA’s nurse workforce integration model connects candidate selection with whole-nurse preparation, pre-arrival readiness, and structured first-year support. Together, these components are designed to strengthen clinical readiness, support nurse well-being, facilitate workforce integration, and contribute to long-term retention.

What if nurse recruitment were treated as a clinical workforce intervention, not merely a staffing transaction?
The model

Built around the complete transition

Hiring an internationally educated nurse involves more than identifying an available candidate. Clinical communication, workplace expectations, relocation, professional identity, unit culture, and personal well-being all shape the transition into a new healthcare system.

The AOLA Workforce Integration Model™ connects recruitment with preparation and first-year support. It gives hospitals a consistent framework while giving nurses tools to enter their new roles informed, supported, and prepared to adapt.

The model is being developed and evaluated with hospital partnership in mind. AOLA does not present untested outcomes as proven results.
A connected workforce journey

The seven phases

Each phase has a distinct purpose, but the value comes from treating recruitment, preparation, transition, and follow-up as one connected process.

01
Discover

Application Review

AOLA reviews nursing background, experience, specialty interests, professional goals, and key readiness milestones before advancing a candidate.

02
Evaluate

Nurse-Led Interview

Nursing professionals assess clinical reasoning, communication, professionalism, patient-centered judgment, adaptability, and alignment with the hiring environment.

03
Prepare

Whole-Nurse Preparation

Candidates receive an individualized readiness plan and preparation addressing professional expectations, communication, feedback, resilience, boundaries, and successful adaptation.

04
Present

Verification & Presentation

AOLA confirms agreed candidate information, gathers references, reviews relevant credential milestones, and presents aligned candidates for the hospital’s independent hiring review.

05
Transition

Offer & Pre-Arrival

The hospital and its immigration counsel lead employment and immigration processes. AOLA remains focused on nurse preparation, communication, relocation readiness, and transition planning.

06
Integrate

First-Year Integration

Structured check-ins support reflection, adaptation, well-being, communication, and appropriate escalation at key points throughout the nurse’s first year.

07
Evaluate

Twelve-Month Completion

AOLA and participating partners review the nurse’s integration experience, well-being, retention status, and lessons that may strengthen future implementation.

Inside whole-nurse preparation

Mindfulness & Resilience Course

AOLA’s course treats mindfulness and resilience as practical workforce-readiness tools. It is designed to help nurses protect their well-being, respond thoughtfully under pressure, receive feedback, maintain healthy boundaries, and remain connected to purpose without losing themselves in the work.

The course does not replace a hospital’s clinical orientation, preceptorship, employee assistance resources, or mental-health services. It complements them by helping nurses build personal practices for sustainable professional growth.

Developing evidence-based practice evaluation

Help evaluate what recruitment can become

AOLA is seeking hospital partners interested in evaluating a nurse-led approach that connects recruitment with preparation and first-year integration. The purpose is to examine feasibility, implementation, and workforce outcomes, not to assume that the model has already proven specific results.

Participation scope, measures, privacy protections, responsibilities, and data-governance expectations would be defined with each hospital partner before evaluation begins.
