If you’ve been keeping up with U.S. immigration news lately, you’re probably tired. Maybe a little confused and just exhausted from it all.
Every month seems to bring a new update, a new pause, or another rule that adds more limits and roadblocks. For many internationally educated nurses and families, it honestly feels like the longest year under the current administration.
So let’s talk about what’s actually happening, without panic, and without sugarcoating how frustrating this has been.
First, you’re not wrong for feeling discouraged
If this season feels overwhelming, that reaction is justified. Waiting is hard. Waiting while the rules keep changing is even harder. And waiting while you’re doing everything right, exams, licensure, documentation, preparation, can feel unfair.
A lot of people are grieving what they thought the process would look like. Some are grieving the version of America they grew up admiring. Naming that doesn’t make you negative. It makes you honest.
So what has actually changed
Recently, the U.S. government released two major updates that affect visa processing.
The first is a proclamation that suspends or limits visa issuance for nationals of certain countries based on national security concerns. This applies broadly across visa types and is based on nationality, not profession. Employment based immigrant visas, including EB3, are included if the applicant is from a restricted country and does not qualify for an exception.
The second update pauses the issuance of immigrant visas for nationals of certain countries identified as high risk for public benefits usage. Under this policy, applicants can still apply, submit documents, and attend interviews, but immigrant visas will not be issued during the pause period. This policy also applies to EB3 because EB3 is an immigrant visa category.
Neither policy cancels cases. Neither removes EB3 as an option. But both introduce delays, and delays are exhausting.
What this means for nurses pursuing EB3
This is where it really stings.
Many nurses have spent years preparing. School. Exams. Licensure. Paperwork. Sacrifices. To be told to wait longer, again, can feel like a slap in the face.
Nurses are not being targeted as a profession. These policies are country based. But if you are from an affected country and no exemption applies, your case may be delayed even if everything else is complete.
That reality is frustrating. It is okay to say that out loud.
Why this season feels so heavy
There’s a unique fatigue that comes from never feeling settled. Just when you adjust your expectations, another update drops. Another pause. Another reminder that the system doesn’t move with urgency for people waiting outside it.
It can feel like the America many of us have come to know and love is being undone in slow motion.
That feeling doesn’t mean you’ve lost hope. It means you’ve been paying attention.
What has not changed, and this matters
Here’s the grounding truth.
These policies are administrative actions. They are not permanent. America is still a democracy. Leadership changes. Policies shift. History shows us that restrictive seasons do not last forever.
EB3 still exists. Nursing shortages still exist. Hospitals still need qualified nurses. Preparation still matters.
Nothing you’ve done has been wasted.
How to move forward without losing yourself
This is where intention and mindfulness matter most.
You can’t control policy. But you can control how informed you are, how prepared you stay, and how much space you allow fear to take up in your life.
Stay aware without becoming consumed. Prepare without panicking. Hold space for frustration without letting it derail your long term vision.
At AOLA, we believe in telling the truth without fear mongering. Yes, this is hard. Yes, it feels like too much sometimes. And no, this is not the end of your story.
Nothing lasts forever. Not delays. Not administrations. Not policies.
If you’re tired, that makes sense. If you’re discouraged, that’s valid. But if you’re still here, still preparing, still believing that your future is bigger than this moment, that matters too.
We’ll keep showing up with clarity, honesty, and support as you navigate this season. Your journey deserves that.
